The Galleria Civica of Modena, one of the more important city of food production in Europe, opened on October 10 in both its locations, Palazzina dei Giardini and Palazzo Santa Margherita, the exhibition “Daniele Spoerri. Eat Art in Transformation”, curated by Susanne Bieri, Antonio d’Avossa, Nicoletta Ossanna Cavadini, on view until 31 January 2016.
Father of the Eat Art, founded in 1967, Spoerri sees nourishment as a link between art and life. The Swiss – Romanian (1930) fully subscribing to the theme of Expo Milano 2015, presented at the Swiss Pavilion “Meissen Porzellan Puzzle”, the work in porcelain made up of 36 panels.
The works on show, over 150, include the first phase of experimentation, with the magazine “Material” (1955-1961), the tableaux-pièges so-called “trap-painting”, compositions of leftover food and used dishes arranged vertically and trapped in resin, now on display at the MOMA in New York, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Among the works on display also the videos of Restaurant Spoerri in Düsseldorf (1968) and the Bistrot Santa Marta made for Mudima Foundation of Milan in 2014. The artist recreates a series of accumulations of “useless” dishes, tools of 20 tables, devoted to Santa Marta, traditionally the saint who prepared the meals for Christ thus patron of cooks. This is new perceptive approach to reality consecrates Spoerri as one of the founders of the “New Realism” in 1960 in Paris, in the apartment of Klein, with Arman, Hains, Dufrèn, Raisse, Tinguely, Christo, Duchamp, Rotella, Niki de Saint-Phalle, César, the critic Réstany. In addition to the participation in Fluxus and many collaborations, in the late ’50s, with artists such as Man Ray, Albers, Duchamp, Baj, Tinguely, Roth, as testify the multiples exposed in the upper rooms.
The three videos on show are Resurrection (1969), Daniel Spoerri dalla A alla Z (1991) an Daniel Spoerri. Eat Art in Transformation (2015). The first, Resurrection, tells the story of a reversed steak, describing its path from a human excrement to its animal genesis, the director is Tony Morgan. The video was also exhibited at the Milan Triennale for the exhibition “Arts & Foods” curated by Germano Celant. The second, Daniel Spoerri dalla A alla Z, made by Studio Azzurro and Mudima Foundation, is a documentary that traces the poetry and the artist’s career through images and testimonies, tools, the artist thought on women and men who serve as “input and output in path of digestion”. In the third video, Daniel Spoerri. Eat Art in Transformation, produced by Channel Ultrafragola for the Show at m.a.x. museum of Chiasso, Switzerland (from 30 April to 30 August 2015), alternates direct testimonies of the artist that retraces crucial moments of his past and relates anecdotes about his family life and “rendez-vous” with Marcel Duchamp, to fragments from the video Profession Obsession.
