In the epicenter of the historical center of Rome, the exhibition of artist couple ETAM will be on view until the 28th of December in the street art gallery VARSI. Founded and consisting of two Polish artists Sainer and Betz, the two youngsters engage in the creation of hyper realistic and touching art.
ETAM’s imagination comes alive on the walls of many different cities, creating an urban surrealistic universe inhabited by ambiguous, melancholic and enigmatic creatures. Men and animals come together in the magical world that they create. Sainer and Betz both attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz and are actively changing the street art culture by murals, paintings and design. Their dedication in the artistic field has had an incredible influence; they created a huge mural, titled Moonshine one year ago in Richmond Virginia. It is the image of a slender woman sitting in a barrel of strawberries. Within a year their fame has risen in a resounding way. The images of their work have been publicized all over the world. VARSI gallery welcomes them to Italy’s capital but does not only present paintings. Thus, VARSI and ETAM collaborate in creating an incredible mural – one of the biggest of Rome – between the neighborhoods Torpignattara and Pigneto.
In the gallery 10 oil-on-canvas, pastel and acryl paintings are presented. The colors are vibrant with clear shades led by lines and shadows which create space and volume. The paintings seem to be representations of emotions and moments and look like snapshots with dimmed colors; clear pastels and ax tints. Some of the subjects are children who sleep, a portrait of an old man and young women looking into the void. Every single piece is made with an incredible detail for light, which point out particular aspects of the composition. The light guides the movement and the forms of the bodies of the figures, the tonality, the sensation and the perception of reality. This surrealistic and dreamy universe is being emphasized by the gallery’s interior. The walls are painted as if the paintings continue in the walls. This fills the entire gallery with floating mushrooms in the space. The minimalistic design dialogues with the paintings which are filled with emotions and colors, recalling a universe sometimes too boyish.
