The form of industry. Gianni Piacentino at the Fondazione Prada

4. Gianni Piacentino

The podium of the Prada Foundation hosts, until January 10, 2016, a retrospective exhibition dedicated to Gianni Piacentino (Turin, 1945), curated by Germano Celant. Fascinated by technology and manual processes, the artist begins with the bike as a sidecar passenger, or as a restorer of classic motorcycles, to debut in the seventies with prototypes of vehicles with industrial materials, or basic geometrical sculptures painted. It was a continuous disassemble and reassemble, building models with references to intimate life, always with the constant goal of the research, the shapes, the perfection …

The exhibition features works ranging from 2015 and back to 1965, a path from the recent works to those formative years. In the first four rooms, works inspired by the Wright brothers, bars and wings, metal structures that refer to speed, interrupted by rectangular slots to anticipate and present what awaits in the next room. Racing vehicles with two or three wheels, propellers, wings, biplanes and seaplanes denied in their function but linear entities intended to be observed for their formal energy and color. An industrial aesthetic precise and perfected, based on the study of the structure down to the painted colors. A visual survey that places the works of Piacentino in an alternative pop and minimal art, an area of possible interplay between the popular universe and the primary cosmos, iconic and aniconic, manual and industrial.

Piacentino’s research is isolated and independent placing in the art forms, materials and processes in relation to industrial development, emphasizing the aesthetic vision of objects as cultural products. It stays between mechanical precision, high engineering, craft experience and decorative industrial entities. With blue, purple and gray, in complete harmony with the intense structures: the feeling is of a still movement, a slow speed. In the upper floor, works of his early, linear geometric shapes, primary, telling of daily life. A fresh and bright path, engaging and enveloping at the same time.
