Monster ID. Intervew with Marotta&Russo

cover-you

What is to wonder is how balanced are the inter-dependency and relationship between the human and the technological. We still talk about a humanism declination that is suitable for a virtual-mechanistic dimension and a post-humanism in pure terms as an identification of sensorial and conceptual hybridization between individuals and encoded mechanisms.

In the exhibition ‘Monster ID’ at Whitelightgallery the duo Marotta & Russo exposes its definition of the Real. The works derive from experiments and approaches related to the contemporary, investigating the methodologies of a visual and intellectual approach of man, from his private interior space to his public phenomenology thus relational, since the early nineties. The exhibition relates to a material presence of a labyrinth – the mind and space – so that a time perspective of change, aesthetic and thematic evolution, lunges in a continuous visual stream. Relevant are the translations of matter of the elements belonging to a purely virtual sphere, for a continuous play of shapes and transpositions on paper, till the use of neon and audio-visual materials.

The aestheticism produced by the reworking of softwares, is the emblem of a continual change from a gaseous to a liquid state: a symbol of the reality itself. A perennial panta rei where everything is infinitely mutable and governed (as the same formal configurations) by the congenital action of man, as creator. The works are installed in the space of the gallery following an abstract representation similar to the geometric nature of constraining forces that converge concentrically towards a central point, and is prepared for the user not as a passive accumulator but involving him in an ongoing dialogue between the presented elements and his consciousness, through a continuous supply of ‘restorative questions’ leading to “here and now” choices always accompanied by the charm of the doubt. The themes flit between arguments related to the manifestation of the individual in the virtual parallel reality as a social network, to the sounding of more and more new logic and inner workings of the artistic techniques related to the contemporary post-digital era.

PAUSE

Follows a conversation with the duo, through the identification of ‘key-words’ related to their past and present work, for an opening of contextual definition, occurred through a virtual correspondence:

‘Hello, I contact you on behalf of Juliet  for an article / interview on your solo show Monster ID recently opened in Milano. I would require your willingness to answer – according to your personal vision and interpretation – to certain ‘keywords’ that will become a substantial part of an alternative interview. The article will be edited by two, myself and Laura Martina, with whom we have chosen to identify these words with the key concepts of your work, macro-areas of definition, with the aim of restoring a cognitive accessibility of new mechanisms of implementation and use of contemporary artistic dimension, related to your search. To the words listed below we require almost fleeting answers, of synthesis and definition but totally declined to your analysis:

Monster
Neo-humanism
Post-digital joints
Prosthesis
Nature
Subjective value
Totalitarian regime

Thank you,

Vanessa Ignoti
